Secondary Education in Germany

Grade Levels: Education in Germany differs from many other countries. Secondary education begins around ages 10-16, known as Sekundarstufe I, after which students choose different school types based on their grade level and abilities. These are divided into three main types: Hauptschule (general education), Realschule (intermediate technical), and Gymnasium (academic high school).

  • Hauptschule: Vocational Schools

Target Audience: Designed for students preparing to enter the workforce or pursue vocational training without needing a higher education degree. Students attend from grades 5-9 or 10 (similar to grades 5-9 in Thailand).

Subjects: Basic subjects include German, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, along with vocational training necessary for various careers.

  • Realschule: Intermediate Technical/Commercial Schools

Target Audience: Suitable for students seeking broader educational and career options, often leading to specialized college programs or more complex career paths. Students attend from grades 5-10 (similar to grades 5-10 in Thailand).

Subjects: More diverse subjects such as German, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, English, and Economics.

  • Gymnasium: Academic High Schools

Target Audience: Ideal for students aiming for a university education, focusing on advanced academic skills and analytical thinking. Students attend from grades 5-12 or 13 (similar to grades 5-12 in Thailand), with an Abitur exam at the end, which is required for university admission.

Subjects: In-depth subjects including Mathematics, German, English, Science, History, and Philosophy, alongside social sciences and arts.

School Atmosphere: Germany’s education system is strict and maintains high standards. Schools emphasize academic learning and regularly assess students’ progress. The environment in schools focuses on discipline and preparing students for either professional careers or higher education.

Academic Year: The school year typically starts in August or September and ends in July, divided into two semesters: the first semester (Sommersemester, August – December) and the second semester (Wintersemester, January – July).
