International Student Exchange Program (F-1)

The International Student Exchange Program (F-1), also known as the F-1 Diploma Program, is a specialized exchange program designed for students in their 10th grade (Grade 10) who wish to complete their high school education and earn a high school diploma from the United States upon successful completion of the program. It is also suitable for students who require guaranteed host families or those who need additional healthcare support due to medical conditions that prevent participation in the J-1 program.

The F-1 program offers greater flexibility compared to the J-1 program. Students are selected to attend schools coordinated by the exchange organization, though they do not have the option to choose the state or city where they will study. The exchange organization will handle the coordination with host families willing to provide accommodation and care. Under this program, there is a high likelihood that students will complete their academic requirements and receive a U.S. high school diploma, depending on the specific conditions of the school.

The majority of participating schools are private institutions with smaller class sizes, allowing for more individualized attention and a better understanding of each student’s unique learning preferences. The smaller class size enables teachers to dedicate more time and tailor lessons to suit each student’s needs. As a result, students often perform better on standardized tests such as the SAT and tend to achieve higher academic outcomes.

The benefits of the F-1 cultural exchange program are:

  • Opportunity to graduate from high-quality schools (if conditions set by the government and/or the school are met).
  • Better language and academic support than public schools, with guidance on setting educational goals alongside students, as well as opportunities to participate in a wider range of extracurricular activities.
  • High chances of being accepted into the program (ideal for those who want certainty in joining the program).
  • Suitable for individuals with specific conditions or health issues requiring special care (as determined by the exchange organization).
  • Pathway to further education: The program offers opportunities for study beyond one academic year and opens up options for continuing education at higher levels, such as bachelor’s or master’s degrees, after completing the program.
